A brick slip reception at Amazons London HQ

London is one of the world’s truly great cities and home to some of the most talented, creative people on the planet.

One of the biggest and fastest growing companies in the world is Amazon. Its reach spans all continents and is quickly becoming a way of life for many people.

This year Amazon opened its new London HQ in Shoreditch. A grand yet modern building that hosts a massive 600,000 sq ft of space across 15 floors.

The building and facilities have been developed, designed and constructed with a social and interactive emphasis.

Design

Designing a 15-storey office tower, sandwiched between the City of London and Shoreditch is not an easy task. Foster and Partners had the privilege of coming up with the design and the results have made a stunning building.

Characteristically sleek in design, using glass facades and having two atrium’s that run the full height of the building helps to create dominance in its footprint.

What is instantly apparent when you walk in to the building is how light and airy the ground floor space is. The designers developed a commanding reception area which has prowess and is greatly accessible. The use of our Olde Bayswater Blend brick slips as a back drop for the reception is inspiring. The fusion of traditional earthy brick work, glass curtain walling and modern tiles and lighting makes for a very pleasing and relaxing first impression.

The reception area is well lit with a ceiling cascade of bulging illumination. The great thing about the whole design is how the whole building is not pigeonholed into one specific function.

Mixed seating scattered throughout the building offering break out areas and private meeting places for creative discussions, team work and breaks.

The building has cafes, and kitchen areas throughout that help cater to the 5000 plus employees that will potentially be working within the building.

Product

Although the use of brick slips within this building was minimal, we feel that their presence at a visitors first point of contact has meaning and significance.

The building has heritage tones running throughout its modernity, and the large brick slipped reception area only amplifies that.

Olde Bayswater Blend, Brick Slips

Olde Bayswater was a fantastic choice due to its reclaimed and random nature, no two bricks are the same and that helps to inject character and warmth into the first contact area.

This feature wall uses both standard slips and corner slips to create the wrap round walled area. Having the amazon logo sitting over the brickwork again helps to highlight the fact that Amazon are steadfast in their approach to integration and tradition.

Result

This is a stunningly designed building which you would almost always expect from Foster and Partners. A great Headquarters for a company that aspires to be the best, the biggest and the most accessible retailer in the world.

We are extremely proud of the part our product has played in the story of this project. The Olde Bayswater is one of our favourite products and we could not be more pleased with the result.

A great installation.
